What are the main "bases" for a guitar solo?

I'm getting an electric guitar soon and I want to write solos. I've looked up tips and the only two I've found is the pentatonic scale which I now know, and just doing it by ear (which i do now). Are there any other things that can help me? I think another is arpeggios
